The genetic modification debate
Brian Cox meets a plant scientist who describes why genetic modification of plants has benefits that are difficult to argue with. Cox then describes the history of the discovery of DNA in Cambridge by Crick and Watson. He discusses the work of Rosalind Franklin, explains the significance of Photograph 51 and describes how this allowed her to suggest the double helix structure. Crick and Watson were then able to build their famous model. Cox describes the significance of genetic sequencing, but how this has ultimately led to the GM controversy. Many scientists believe that GM is the future of environmentally friendly agriculture. Cox interviews one of these scientists and explains that a vast amount of research supports the use of GM crops.
