Noel Coward's 'The Vortex'

Noel Coward recalls the challenges he faced over his contentious play, 'The Vortex'. Coward's understudy for the first production was none other than John Gielgud, who reads an excerpt from the play.

In 1964, The National peformed 'Hay Fever' leading to a revival of Coward's work - a turn in fortune he had not expected, "I am thrilled and flattered and frankly a little flabbergasted that the National Theatre should have had the curious perceptiveness to choose a very early play of mine and to give it a cast that could play the Albanian telephone directory."
