Young coalminers
Following the establishment of the National Coal Board in 1947, its first major task was to train the next generation of coalminers. Throughout the country pit training areas were introduced. These included cinema rooms, lecturing halls and even reconstructed pit faces so the trainee miners could get a taste of what it would be like working underground. Of course it was totally different when they actually started work in the pits.
