Jerusalem and Sweden
Nicholas Wade on peace amidst conflict in Jerusalem, and Steve Vickers on stemming the exodus of residents on a small Swedish island.
Now that the Americans have been pushing the Israelis and Palestinians towards negotiating for a lasting peace, Nicholas Wade travels to Jerusalem on a fact-finding mission to understand the situation better. Only, he doesn't find facts as much as interpretations - and surprises. There seems to be as much divergence in opinions among Israelis and Palestinians as between them, and the place at the heart of the conflict, the Old City of Jerusalem, is an area where the different communities live peacefully side by side.
In Sweden, on an island archipelago off the western coast, the locals have different issues to grapple with. How to stop the exodus of people moving to the mainland? Plenty of people come and buy houses on the island of Vrango, but they only stay for a few weeks a year. Steve Vickers took the ferry to go see how the permanent residents try and keep their community going.
