Colin Evans gardening tips
Christmas trees can now be found in most retail outlets, so which do you choose, do you go for the rooted types or the ones cut off in their prime. The trees without roots should be treated in the same way as a bunch of cut flowers, so when you get your tree home stand the whole thing in a bucket of water outside for at least two days. That way the tree will have taken up as much water as it can hold. Once indoors keep the base of the tree emersed in water.

The rooted types should be treated like indoor plants by planting them in compost and keeping well watered all through the festive season and then the tree can be stood outside in its pot or simply planted into the open ground.

If you are planning some new varieties of plants for the vegetable patch next year then why not try my favourates for the 2014 season.

Lettuce "Intered" is a Little Gem type with a red heart and looks great in any salad bowl, though,銆赌If a new Tomato is what you are looking for then have a go at Tomato "Rosella" which has a dark red almost purple coat. It has a very sweet flavour with a nice level of acidity. Great grilled or simply eaten with a piece of good English cheese or a couple of slices of ham.

In well dug and sandy soil Carrot "Atomic Red" is a real winner. It's delicious raw or cooked and has long strong foliage which aids lifting. I can recommend all three of theses.
