Andrew Tebbatt is a perfusionist - no, that's nothing to do with magic, although the work he does could be seen that way...

Perfusionists perform an essential role during cardiopulmonary bypass operations. They run the machine that oxygenates the blood whilst the heart is being operated on, keeping the patient alive whilst their heart is inactive.

And Andrew is not only a leading specialist in this area, he has now been awarded the prestigious Bob Moses Memorial Fellowship Award, the highest award that can be given by the Society of Perfusion Scientists.

He has worked in Leicester since 1981 and became the Head of Perfusion at Leicester's Glenfield Hospital seven years ago.

Andrew works closely with the famous ECMO department too and was present at the very first ECMO procedure, performed at Glenfield back in 1989.

With his team, he provides daily support to the cardiac surgeons.

Jim Davis does go into a live operating theatre so there are some noises and descriptive terms that relate to operations in this report. Jim went to meet Andrew at the Glenfield Hospital earlier this week and he told me how it felt to be given this prestigious award.
