Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines killing thousands of people and leaving millions homeless, continued political instability in Egypt hit tourism hard, the EU announced money to help preserve the ancient city of Pompeii in Italy and there was growing optimism in the airline industry although some legacy airlines continued to struggle against some low cost rivals.
