Chloe meets BAFTA ‘Breakthrough Brit’ and games developer Mitu Khandaker to see her first game Redshirt™ in action.
Redshirtâ„¢ was designed and coded entirely by Mitu. Redshirtâ„¢ is described by Mitu as a comedy sci-fi social media simulation game.
Mitu began simple coding as a young girl, teaching herself HTML and using Text Editor to create websites, she then decided she wanted to design video games.
Redshirtâ„¢ is played and demonstrated by young people as Mitu describes how the game works and how it was created. Mitu explains that lots of algorithms create the framework in which all characters socially interact. She explains that the attributes and behaviours of the characters are designed by her through coding.
An algorithm is a precise set of instructions that tell the computer exactly how to carry out a task. Code is the language used to create an algorithm. Mitu explains this is an abstract construct broken down into smaller steps and deciding on the outcome of each of these steps allows for self-expression.
Mitu emphasises the ability to code is a creative one, allowing for self-expression, as significant as learning to read, paint or write poetry.
