Domestic abuse victim "gobsmacked” by police behaviour

A domestic violence victim said the officer who initially attended the scene when she was “in massive a state of shock” made inappropriate comments to her about dating.

A critical report into the way police in England and Wales deal with domestic violence has found forces are unnecessarily putting women at risk of violence, or even murder.

Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary interviewed victims and reviewed the work of all 43 forces. They found an "alarming and ineffective response" to abuse from many forces.

‘Kimberley’, a victim of domestic violence, told Rachel Burden that the officer who initially attended the scene when she was “in a massive state of shock” made comments to her about dating that “absolutely gobsmacked” her family and friends:

“He also told me all about his personal life and suggested he’d got a friend in the force who would like to take girls like me out.”

‘Kimberley’ and her family and friends also felt that the officer examined her physical injuries inappropriately:

“He also didn’t look at all the injuries straight away while everybody was in the room, he said ‘oh no it doesn’t matter’ because I’d put a dress on with leggings, because I had a lot of cuts and marks on my legs and feet.

“I said ‘do you need to look at those as well’ and he said ‘oh no that’s okay’ but as soon as they left the room he went ‘oh I’ll look at your legs now’ and so I showed him and they walked in when I was showing him and they said ‘why couldn’t he have looked at that when we were there but as soon as we left, he did’.”
