Mango ban causes frenzy
´óÏó´«Ã½ WM's Midlands Masala gets reaction to the proposed ban on Alphonso mangoes.
From the 1st May there is a proposed ban on the importation of a particularly sweet Indian mango known as 'Alphonso '.
Known as the ‘king’ of mangos, Alphonso mangoes will not be available in the UK and the rest of Europe after a fruit fly was found in some imports.
The ban was proposed by the European Union. A spokesman for the Department For Environment, Food and Rural affairs said “A temporary ban on mangoes entering the UK from India was voted in at the European Commission after plant pests that threaten the UK's £321 million salad crop industry were repeatedly found in shipments. If any of these products brought from India are found at the UK's border, or any EU countries, they will be destroyed. "These restrictions are important to protect our home-grown salad crops from potential pests and diseases."
Midlands based Professor Samir Dani, is a regular buyer and consumer of Alphonso mangos. In this extract he tells ´óÏó´«Ã½ WM’s Midlands Masala presenter Arshia Riaz that his family has always looked forward to the Alphonso mango season in particular, and he has seen families rushing to shops to stock up on their mangos before the ban is in place…
