Legal aid cuts create "serious risk" of denial of justice

"There is a problem" over changes to legal aid which means there is "a serious risk of people being denied access to justice", Lord Neuberger, president of the UK Supreme Court, has said.

"Access to justice for poorer people and people with small claims is rather more difficult than it was", Lord Neuberger told Victoria Derbyshire during a special programme from the Supreme Court.

The legal aid system "could undoubtedly be improved", he added.

The government has said reform of the "expensive" system is vital in austere times.

Reform of the legal aid system in England and Wales has seen walkouts by lawyers in protest at what The Criminal Bar Association called the "crippling" cuts.
