Seven Jobs for Seven Days

Seven Jobs for Seven Days
Each week on ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio Humberside our resident gardening expert, Doug Stewart, gives you seven jobs for seven days to help keep your garden in tip top condition.

This week I have been catching just a little bit of Chelsea fever from the TV coverage, of magical show gardens with their exuberant plantings. We have also been out in our own gardens, helping them make the change from spring to summer.

1.
We have been removing the old spring bedding, which is coming to the end of its life, and replacing it with plants that will last all summer long.

2.
We have also been continuing to make small sowings of vegetables, so we get tasty young crops of carrot, spinach, lettuce, and beetroot over the coming weeks and months.

3.
We have also been getting the beds ready for planting out sweetcorn, courgettes, and beans.

4.
Pots are being filled with compost and filled with tomatoes and other salad crops to grow in the sunniest part of the garden.

5.
This is also the time of the year we love to prune Pyracanthas which are growing against walls and fences, prune out shoots growing into the wall, and those growing away from it as well. The other shoots can be shortened to around 3 or 4 inches, to encourage the spurs to form that carry the flower buds and berries in the autumn.

6.
We are also making new plants for free by dividing up spring flowering perennials like Pulmonaria if they are getting a little overgrown.

7.
Finally we have been making frog ponds, out of a large bucket sunk into the ground in a shady part of the garden. We place some old terracotta pots upside down in the middle of the bucket to support a stone to allow our frog to sit, and swim and sit again. This is a great project to carry out with children…
