The physiological challenges facing World Cup football players
How will football players cope with the heat and humidity in Brazil?; The end-of-life therapy that helps ease patients’ fear of dying; How to help a friend who is depressed
In some of the World Cup locations in Brazil, temperatures will reach 30 degrees Celsius with very high levels of humidity. To find out what sort of physiological challenges this is going to present for the players, consultant anaesthetist Kevin Fong took part in an experiment in an environmental chamber which replicated conditions in Brazil. As part of this he was required to run for half an hour at 30 degrees in 80% humidity. Kevin, who is the author of Extremes: Life, Death and Limits of the Human Body, joins Claudia in the Health Check studio to tell her how he got on.
Dignity therapy
What would you remember about your life if you got a diagnosis of a terminal illness? What words of advice and messages would you want to leave for loved ones? These are some of the questions dying patients are being asked in something called Dignity Therapy. It was developed in Canada by Professor Harvey Chochinov, but it is being used around the world, and this week more therapists are being trained at a workshop in Manitoba. Karen Pauls from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation finds out more about how the therapy works.
Helping friends
When people have mental health issues, friends and relatives around them often find themselves at a loss to know how they can help or what they should say. To discuss how best to help friends who you know or suspect may be having problems with their mental health, Health Check is joined by clinical psychologist Linda Blair. Listeners who have experienced mental health difficulties also tell Claudia what they found helped them the most.
