Kilroot, Co Antrim: Artillery Battery

The townland of Kilroot sits on the mouth of Belfast Lough, near Carrickfergus.

On a clear day you can see over the Irish Sea to Scotland.

During the war Kilroot was deemed an ideal spot for an artillery battery to protect Belfast from German invasion by sea.

It was complemented by Grey Point Fort, at Helen's Bay, on the other side of the lough.

As local historian Philip Orr explains, no vessel could get past the Kilroot artillery battery without permission.
