D-Day: ‘Only damage to HMS Belfast was to the toilets’
Peter Allen went on board HMS Belfast and found out that the only damage to her on D-Day was to her toilets “from the sheer volume and movement of the guns.”
He toured the boat, sat in the seat of the commanding officers and stood at the helm where Churchill wanted to be but wasn’t allowed for safety reasons.
On Friday 6th June Peter Allen will be live in Normandy on the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings. From Breakfast all the way through to Drive, he'll join veterans on the beaches in northern France where the campaign to liberate Western Europe began in 1944. He'll also bring you full coverage of the international service of commemoration which the Queen and President Obama will attend.
