Has Everest Lost its Soul?

After 16 Sherpas recently lost their lives in an avalanche, meet the families who depend on Mt Everest for their livelihoods

In April, 16 Sherpas lost their lives in an avalanche while working for expedition teams climbing Mt Everest. The tragedy raised all sorts of questions about workers’ rights and compensation but also about how to treat the mountain itself. Navin Khadka from the ´óÏó´«Ã½â€™s Nepali Service travels to remote villages in the Himalayas to talk to the families of those killed and to hear from Sherpas about the demands for change they are making to their bosses and the government.

The mountain provides livelihoods for many families - indeed some have become rich as a result. But the mountain holds deep spiritual significance for the community and for some this is under threat.
