An estimated 98,400 people in the UK - or around 1.5 per 1000 of the UK population live with the disease.
Ann-Marie Byrne was diagnosed 17 years ago and she told 5 live's World Cup Breakfast "I saw my husband die of aids in 1996 and we all thought that would happen to us but now of course people are living longer."
Now in her sixties, Ann-Marie says over the years the stigma has become more subtle but hasn't changed but she remains positive about herself.
