Breast milk and HIV, an internet router for Africa and rising water levels in India

Factors identified in breast milk could convey anti-viral HIV protection, A brick-like router gets people online in remote Africa and alarming peak water levels in India

Breast milk prevents HIV?
Research suggests that breast milk may offer protection against HIV transmission from mother to child. This despite the fact that breast feeding is seen as the main method of transmission of HIV between mother and child. Around 10% of infants with HIV infected mothers will contract HIV through breastfeeding. But why is the infection rate not higher? Factors identified in the milk are thought to convey anti-viral protection. Researchers are looking at ways of developing these into drugs to prevent HIV transmission to infants and possibly adults.

Ushahidi's BRCK Released
Staying online in some parts of Africa can be frustrating with variable signals and intermittent electricity supply. Ushahidi's new brick-like WiFi and 3G router aims to overcome many of the challenges. Co-founders Juliana Rotich and Philip Walton discuss BRCK's capabilities and keeping Africa connected.

Ganges - Brahmaputra Delta Water Rising
We have reported before on the dam building projects on the Brahmaputra River, in north east India, and how they are being blamed for fluctuating water levels. Now, human construction is also being implicated in sea level rise at the base of the river, 2,900 kilometres downstream. Embankment building, sometimes using nothing more than rocks, sandbags and plastic bags, has been used for more than 100 years to create usable land for crops like rice, but they could be a factor in making flooding worse. New work looks at peak water levels in the delta in southwest Bangladesh, and what it shows is alarming. The area, home to likely more than 20 million people - could be uninhabitable in the coming decades. Professor Julian Orford, from Queens University Belfast and Professor Colin Thorne, from Nottingham University discuss the issue.
