A former teacher, who was sacked after one of her 10-year-old pupils was locked in a room, says she was "frightened to death" that he would stab her.

Julie Smith, a former special educational needs co-ordinator, said the child had become angry after being told bad news and went looking for a knife, compass or pair of scissors to attack her with.

She said he kicked and pulled hair from two other staff members, who locked him in a "quiet room" for "his own safety and the safety of everybody else".

However, the council said the young boy had no weapon, and locking him in the room would "never" be an acceptable way of dealing with a vulnerable child".

Ms Smith said, "I have four young children at home. I honestly thought he'd do something bad... I was scared for everybody."
