Memories of the 1980s Miners Strike; Dad takes over the Child Care.
As the great coal miners’ strike of 1984 to 1985 started, men took on childcare and other roles in the house, while wives went to work, where there were jobs to be had. Interviews recalling the situation in one Pontypridd family. Gary hoped that when the strike was over, then the situation at home would go back to ‘normal’. This never happened – the pit in Nantgarw closed and he carried on as the househusband. The interviews show how their attitudes to housework changed.
