A leading United Nations physician says the world faces an "extraordinary" threat from the Ebola virus, unless a 20% increase in effort is made.

David Nabarro, the British medic leading the UN's response to the outbreak, said the virus, which has killed 3,300 people so far, needed dealing with "properly" and without delay.

Speaking after a donors conference in London, he said the virus was similar to the initial outbreak of HIV, but much "quicker".

"The interval between infection and people getting really ill is a matter of a few weeks. Unfortunately most people, unless they receive good treatment, just don't recover," he said.
