Kenneth Clark at the Basilica of St Francis of Assisi
Sir Kenneth Clark describes the Basilica of St Francis of Assisi as 'the richest and most evocative church in Italy'. The building was begun the day after St Francis was canonised in 1228, two years after his death. It is a gothic masterpiece, and also a marvel of engineering, which is decorated with fine medieval art. Clark remarks that this magnificent church was a 'strange monument to the little, poor man'.
