Tata Kimbangu, Symphony no. 1 – 1st and 3rd movements
Performed by the Orchestre Symphonique Kimbanguiste, which was founded in 1994 by conductor Armand Diangienda in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Tata Kimbangu marks the newest chapter in the orchestra’s extraordinary story, as its self-taught members turn their hand to composing. Orchestra leader Heritier Mayimbi and bassoonist Johnny Balongi collaborated to write a symphony infusing classical music with Congolese culture.
The piece was premiered in Kinshasa in 2010 to celebrate Congo’s 50 years of independence.
