Rochester and Strood: The significance of a UKIP win
5 live's political correspondent John Pienaar summarises the result of the Rochester and Strood by-election in which former Tory MP Mark Reckless was re-elected for UKIP.
"No-one can say that this party could not get in the way of the Torys and siphon off enough Tory votes to deny David Cameron the second term in No 10 Downing Street that he craves".
"There is one crumb of comfort for Cameron...it could have been worse. The majority, short of 3000, could have been bigger".
"Whilst they can't say with any great confidence they've stopped the UKIP band wagon, there's no sign, no undisputable sign, that the Tories are sinking deeper into the purple mire".
