Ingham: WWI memorial is 'symbol' of football's sacrifice

During WWI, hundreds of professional footballers joined the 17th Service Battalion of the Middlesex Regiment - known commonly as the Football Battalion.

They swapped the pitch for the trench - and many paid the price with their lives in the process.

5 live Sport's Mike Ingham travelled to Longueval, France, to visit the memorial to the footballers, unveiled in 2010.

He was joined by football historian Andrew Riddoch, who explained why the players volunteered to fight for their country.
