How are plastics made?
Fran Scott recaps the extraction of crude oil and fractional distillation, including the link between molecule size, intermolecular forces and boiling point. Cracking and then polymerisation are then described with a marshmallow model. Fran visits a company that makes PVC and learns about different uses of this plastic. Additives are used during the manufacturing process to control the properties of different PVCs. Fran observes different stages of the manufacturing process.
