Cosmetic surgery expert: Plastic surgery needs more regulation

People considering paying for cosmetic surgery need better information about who can carry it out safely, and the likely outcome, according to the Royal College of Surgeons.

The college has published plans for safeguards, including a voluntary register requiring surgeons to show they have the appropriate skills and experience.

Steve Cannon, chair of the Cosmetic Interspecialty Surgeon Committee, told Today: "This branch of surgery, which is a very broad branch of surgery, was not particularly well regulated."

"If you wish to do this sort of surgery then you should define which area of the body you wish to operate on, that will restrict your practice to those areas that you have teaching and skills in, and you will be certified in that area."
