UN's New Plans To Help Migrants
Volker Turk, Assistant High Commissioner for Protection at the UN's refugee agency, has called for a robust state-led search and rescue regime to help migrants in difficulties in the Mediterranean Sea. He said this could include compensation and incentive schemes for commercial seafarers, to encourage them to rescue the migrants.He said if there were no safe pathways for people fleeing dire current circumstances, they would continue to be exploited by smugglers.
