How Wham! woke up communist China
Thirty years ago Wham! became the first western band to play in the then closed-off China. 12,000 people turned up to the concert in Beijing. It was a rare glimpse of western culture for Chinese people who were just starting to look outward. Wham! manager Simon Napier-Bell told 5 live how he convinced Chinese officials to let the duo in.
Simon said: "It was completely closed. Pop music was mainly girls singing in incredibly high, sweet voices. Incredibly silly tunes.
"It was really an amazing thing to persuade them to let anything in."
