This place is associated with a long list of famous writers - Ivan Turgenev, Ivan Bunin, Nikolai Leskov, the poets Tyutchev and Fet, the short story writer Leonid Andreev - but feels increasingly adrift from the rest of the country. Is it really trapped in time - and do other regional towns share this fate?
