CPS: Lord Janner not prosecuted 'solely because of medical condition'
Alison Saunders, Director of Public Prosecutions at the CPS explained the decision not to prosecute Lord Janner.
Labour peer Greville Janner should have been prosecuted in the past for 20 serious charges of sexual assault, some involving children, according to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).
But the CPS has today decided that he shouldn't go to court now because the severity of his dementia means he is not fit to take part in any proceedings.
Alison Saunders, Director of Public Prosecutions at the CPS explained the decision not to prosecute Lord Janner:
"The decision has been made on the basis of the medical evidence, I am very clear that had it not been for the medical evidence, this is a case that we would have bene prosecuting."
Leicestershire Police has said the decision not to prosecute a man suspected of sexually abusing vulnerable children who were resident in care homes was 'the wrong one'. They are exploring possible legal avenues.
A QC himself, Greville Janner was a prominent Labour MP from 1970 to 1997 when he was made a member of the House of Lords. He has been suspended from the Labour party today.
