Crawley, West Sussex: Cottage Hospital
In 1914, while the town's men fought in foreign fields, Crawley Cottage Hospital very quickly became a focal point for community spirit.
People donated gifts of clothes, aprons, kitbags and bandages as the small hospital received war-wounded men back from the front.
Local women signed up for the Voluntary Aid Detachment, carrying out tasks such as feeding the patients and giving first aid, but women like Louisa Colt-Williams, longed to be closer to the front line.
John Young narrates a story of great bravery and courage, with Crawley author Karen Dunn.
