Victoria Station, Manchester: Soldiers Gate
Thousands of soldiers from across Greater Manchester passed through Victoria Station in the city centre during the Great War as they left for the front line.
They left through a small gate tucked behind railway offices to get their train to the south and onward to France or Belgium.
At least one in in ten never returned.
Their sacrifice is marked with a small plaque on the Soldiers Gate which is a lasting reminder of Victoria Station鈥檚 contribution to the war to end all wars.
