Deansgate, Manchester: Temperance

Onward Buildings on Deansgate in the centre of Manchester was the purpose built home of the Lancashire and Cheshire Band of Hope and Temperance Union.

The Union had been founded to deal with the problem of drinking and to encourage people to sign a pledge to abstain from alcohol.

During the Great War the Union was concerned that war service would encourage teetotallers to start drinking, and drinkers to consume even more with their daily rum ration – so it started working with the army to issue pledge cards to new recruits. It was helped by the decision by the royal family’s pledge not to touch alcohol during the war.
