This summer, as every summer, tens of thousands of British people will head for the continent and pick up a hire car for their holiday.

However from June the 8th in Britain, your paper counterpart licence will have no legal status. The DVLA says you should destroy your paper counterpart after that date.

Instead, you must print and take a special code with you on holiday: which can only be obtained from the DVLA website 72 hours before the car hire is due to start. Travellers who don't make the change may not get their hire car.

Edmund King, Automobile Association President, explained the impact of DVLA new policy.

He said "keep hold of your counterpart for a little while".
