Ken Spruce鈥檚 Story
A Derby man, who grew up in Torquay, has been describing the moment he was shot at during the Second World War.
Ken Spruce, who lives in Allestree, was almost 11-years-old on VE Day.
Prior to victory her recalls walking to Sunday school in Torquay when German planes flew over and started using their machine guns. Everyone dived for cover. A woman who he was with threw herself on top of him. That day St Marychurch in Torquay was bombed and 21 children were killed. Ken鈥檚 father, who was in the police, helped to get the bodies out.
A street party was held on Ken鈥檚 road. He says it was a big celebration and they burnt their blackouts in a bonfire in the garden. Ken says there was a sense of a relief for his parents, but as a child he did not fully understand the full impact of war and VE Day.
