Jennifer Forsyth’s Story
Jennifer Forsyth was 13 and at boarding school in Windermere. She recalls it was a sunny and fine day.
The pupils were not allowed into the town where there were bonfires and firework. So, with her friends, she climbed out of the dormer window in their attic room out onto the roof. They had to watch the celebrations from there – they could see the smoke from the bonfires and the fireworks in the sky.
Usually the matrons would come round and check on all the pupils – but nobody came on VE Day – so they were able to stay out there for a while.
