Geoff Hill’s Story
Geoff Hill from Sedgefield is an aviation historian, and has researched the history of RAF Middleton St George.
The base was known as Goosepool and home to Lancaster Bombers, but is now Durham Tees Valley Airport.
Geoff says: "There was elation on VE Day. They were praying on the ground that it was over, and it was revelment and devilment all the way! There was one guy called Suds Sutherland, and he was the Guy of Gisborne of 419 Squadron. On VE Day he rode his motorcycle through the officers’ mess when they were all dining. He then had his lunch, and flew to France to pick up 25 PoW's who had been captured in Dunkirk. Then he came back and started again with the revelments!"
