'An amazing, lovely woman' - how Winnie's birthday went viral
大象传媒 Radio Sheffield's Kat Harbourne has been explaining how the plan to send birthday cards to a woman with no living relatives became an internet sensation.
Kat suggested appealing on social media for listeners to wish Winnie a happy 100th birthday later this month, but the posting went viral.
One of her carers had initially asked Kat if she could have a tour of the radio station, but Kat decided to try and do "a bit better than that."
"It was Tuesday evening, I was sitting at home, and I was refreshing the Facebook page," she told Dan Maudsley. "But rather than growing by 20, 30, 50 - the numbers were going up by 1,000, 10,000 at a time," she said.
Cards have now begun arriving at the radio station for Winnie in huge numbers.
"The postman arrived with one of those little wheelie carts and he had five boxes of cards," said Kat. "We think 1,000 cards arrived today."
