Catterick Garrison : One of the Biggest Army Bases in the World
The order to start building Catterick Garrison came through in August 1914. Since then it has gone on to be one of the largest military bases in the world. The picture shows HRH The Princess Royal inspecting a guard of honour after she had presented colours to the Green Howards at Catterick during the interwar years. The countryside had been transformed into this huge garrison town in a relatively short period of time.
Five thousand German POW's helped build parts of Catterick Garrison including the construction of an officer's club and a theatre. Now very little if anything from WW1 survives today. Buildings have come and gone, but it still remains one of the most important bases for the British Army.
