Redcar Cemetery, Redcar: Eye Witness Account of a Plane Crash
Captain Allan was a pilot from New Zealand whose aeroplane crashed near Redcar cemetery.
Vera Robinson was four-years-old when she was walking with her mother and describes seeing the aircraft collide with a telegraph poll.
From that day onwards Vera said her family placed flowers on the young airman鈥檚 grave, which is just metres from the crash site.
Mrs Robinson describes Captain Allan鈥檚 family arriving from New Zealand to take his body home. But after hearing that the burial site would be well looked after they decided Redcar would remain his final resting place.
Vera remembers her and her siblings each being given 拢5 by the family.
The New Zealand pilot鈥檚 Sopwith Camel is believed to have suffered an engine malfunction.
