Alan has had a stutter all his life - but has been a covert stutterer - one who changes their words and sentence formation in order to disguise the stutter. He even had to tell wife Angela about the stutter a few dates into their relationship as she hadn't even noticed. During their converstion they discuss how Angela has helped Alan over the years to hide his condition, and the changes that have been made now that Alan has tried a course created by people with stutters.
