A Christian bakery in the US have encouraged a Northern Ireland firm to appeal against the judgement that it discriminated against a gay customer.

A judge ruled Ashers Baking Company discriminated by refusing to make a cake with a pro-gay marriage slogan.

Melissa and Aaron Klein, who run Sweet Cakes in Oregon, were fined $135,000 (拢87,000) in April for refusing to make a wedding cake for a lesbian couple.

They have now closed their shop and sell cakes from their home.

Aaron Klein told 5 live "I absolutely think they should appeal. I believe that every Christian should unite under the banner of Christ and stand for God's word."

"This girl was a returning customer. I would have been more than happy to make her any other cake, but I could not be a part of her wedding," he told Stephen Nolan.

"These girls claimed that they were harmed in 178 different ways by me simply saying no thank you. If I show up with my vehicle marked with the business logo at a same sex wedding, everybody assumes I agree with that."
