Download, Andercon and Hawkins

Start your day with the latest news and updates, with Jim and Jo at breakfast.

Over 70,000 fans are descending on Donington Park in the north of our county for the three-day Download Music Festival. It's a magnet for devotees of heavy metal and a must-do gig for some of the industry's biggest names. Jim went on a tour of the site yesterday and began by meeting some of the festival goers who'd already arrived and set up camp. Calling all fans of Thunderbirds, Stingray, and Captain Scarlet! The annual convention celebrating the supermarionation of Gerry Anderson gets underway today in Leicester! Hundreds of fans of the children's TV shows will be in the city to meet their heroes - and the puppets they control in the flesh! (or string)! Jim and Jo spoke to a man who knows his Joe 90 from his Space 1999, Nick William, the Chairman of Fanderson, the official Gerry Anderson fan club. Donations continue to come in for the fund to finance the latest statue planned for Leicester. But there's still some way to go. When the current work to rebuild Leicester's market space is finally completed next Spring, one of its new landmarks will be a statue in honour of Alice Hawkins - the local leader of the women's suffrage movement a century ago.
