Constituent: Charles Kennedy ‘a typical West Highlander’

Constituents from the Highlands who knew Charles Kennedy have paid tribute to the former Liberal Democrat Party leader.

Kennedy, who led his party from 1999 to 2006, died at his home in Fort William aged 55.

Alison McLeod who runs a filling station in Applecross said “there was nothing pompous about him at all. He was very engaging, very friendly and warm. A typical West Highlander.”

Shinty sports commentator Hugh Dan MacLennan, who went to school with Kennedy, added that he feared for the former MP for Ross, Skye and Lochaber when he lost his parliamentary seat last month.

“I remember thinking at the time – Charles has lost his mother, he’s lost his father, he’s now lost his political seat, this is the end,” said MacLennan. “I really did think a circle had been squared that night – I think it dawned on me personally. I just had a dread for the consequences”.
