In May 1994 the Labour leader John Smith died suddenly of a heart attack. The Sun newspaper the following day read ‘OUR NEXT PRIME MINISTER DIED YESTERDAY’. Lord Kinnock, who preceded John Smith as leader, Professor Mike Besser who treated him, and journalist Andrew Grice, who covered the story, recall their memories of the man, and the moment they learned of his death.
