Sheku Bayoh: The man who died in police custody in Scotland

Lawyer Aamer Anwar speaks to 大象传媒 UK Black鈥檚 Devon Daley about the death of Sheku Bayoh.

Last weekend saw the funeral of Sheku Bayoh, a Sierra Leonean man who died on 3rd May 2015 after being arrested by police in Kirkcaldy, Fife. He had been detained, handcuffed, pepper-sprayed, and put in leg restraints following an alleged altercation with a police officer. The exact circumstances of the incident still remain unclear, with allegations that Mr Bayoh was wielding a knife disputed by his family. Since the incident Mr Bayoh鈥檚 family say they have been given several conflicting accounts as to how and why he died, and that more than a month on they still don鈥檛 know what happened. In this extract the lawyer representing the family Aamer Anwar speaks to 大象传媒 UK Black鈥檚 Devon Daley.

* The PIRC (Public Investigation & Review Commission) were approached for an interview, they declined due to the case being ongoing but sent this statement which was broadcast on Sunday 7 June. 鈥淭he PIRC has been leading on the investigation into the death in custody of Sheku Bayoh and since the hours following his death on Sunday 3 May 2015, has made several attempts to secure statements from the arresting officers. Those officers have now agreed to provide statements to the PIRC and now that the PIRC is in the process of gathering the material, it will be considered along with the information already gathered throughout the course of the investigation to date.鈥
