Rachel Dolezal and racial identity

The name Rachael Dolezal, a local civil rights leader in the US northwest has become known around the world, after her parents told the media that she is a white woman who has been passing herself off as black for years.

Dolezal, a well-known university lecturer was head of the local chapter of civil rights group NAACP. Following the allegations she stepped down from her role at the civil rights organisation.

She is said by her family to have been lying about her background. Dolezal's parents say the family's ancestry is Czech, Swedish and German, with some Native American heritage as well. Dolezal's name became a worldwide Twitter trend, with more than 100,000 tweets mentioning her last Friday.
