A man whose Labrador ate a "giant jellyfish" says the free-swimming marine animals "have been washing up on the beaches down in Weymouth certainly for the last couple of months".
Newspaper reports claim the jellyfish community is currently undergoing a "huge breeding surge鈥 - which could pose a significant threat to tourism at British coastal resorts.
Idris Martin said he was watching his dog play in the sea when 鈥渁ll of a sudden I saw a dragon coming out of the water. I thought what on earth is she doing? It was this giant jellyfish!"
James Wright, Assistant Curator at the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth added 鈥渢here鈥檚 a few different theories about why there's an increase in jellyfish population. One is because there is some levels of overfishing, reducing some of the fish that may predate on them ".
