From Syria to Sweden
About nine months ago, the migration correspondent of Britain's Guardian newspaper, Patrick Kingsley, tried to find out how a boat sank in the middle of the Mediterranean, killing almost all of the 500 migrants who were on board. The story led him to a man called Hashem Alsouki, a 40-year-old Syrian refugee living in an isolated town in the desert outside Cairo. Hashem, his wife, and their three young sons had almost got on that boat. But they were arrested on the beach while waiting to board. Earlier this year Hashem decided he wanted to risk the sea again in order to seek a better life for his family in Europe. He allowed Patrick Kingsley to go with him to document the journey. Weekend's Paul Henley spoke to Patrick and asked him to tell us about Hashem's journey from Syria to Sweden.
